The grandparent scam is making rounds in the city according to Kingston Police.
Investigators say a resident received a call on April 28 from someone claiming to be their grandchild. They say the scam involves a caller telling the victim that they have been injured or arrested and need money for help.
Investigators say someone went to the victim’s home to collect $5,500. They say an attempt was later made to have $100,000 wired to a store that deals in the sale of gold.
Residents are being reminded that cash or wire transfer is never required for bail. They suggest those who receive such a call to contact a trusted family member and never act alone while under pressure.
Investigators are encouraging anyone who may have been targetted to contact Kingston Police at 613-549-4660 or report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
