The Ontario Provincial Police is reminding motorists that safe driving is a personal responsibility as Canada Road Safety Week gets underway ahead of the busy Victoria Day long weekend.
The annual campaign runs from May 12 to 18 and focuses on reducing dangerous driving behaviours linked to serious collisions and fatalities on Ontario roads. According to the OPP, speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, and failing to wear seatbelts were contributing factors in many of the 344 deaths investigated on OPP-patrolled roads last year.
Police say every decision made behind the wheel can have life-changing consequences for drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, and families.
During the campaign, officers across the province will conduct targeted enforcement and education initiatives aimed at reducing risky driving behaviours. With warmer weather arriving, the OPP is also reminding motorists to watch for increased pedestrian and cyclist traffic.
The campaign is led nationally by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and forms part of Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2035, which aims to make Canadian roads the safest in the world.
