Gardening season is underway, and gardening expert Carla Coville is encouraging people to grow their own food to help reduce grocery costs.
Coville explained that investing in growing food at home can provide a positive return, especially as food prices continue to rise.
She stressed that research can benefit any gardener. Coville advised people to understand each plant’s needs, including sunlight, soil type and compatibility with other plants.
Coville also highlighted the SEEDit program, funded by The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group.
The program helps people start their own gardens and encourages them to share produce with family members, neighbours and local food banks. Residents can register online for a voucher through the SEEDit website.
Coville also said gardeners should focus on quality over quantity.
She said regular checks for pests and diseases can help gardeners identify problems early before they spread.
