A report being presented to Gananoque Council tonight outlines the potential advantages and challenges of flexible work hours and a four-day work week for municipal staff.
The review was requested through a directive issued by Mayor John Beddows in April. Senior managers consulted staff across all municipal departments and examined how various scheduling options could impact operations, customer service, and employee wellbeing.
The report found that many departments already use flexible scheduling to accommodate evening meetings, training sessions, emergency response duties, and other work outside regular business hours. Staff generally indicated that flexible hours support work-life balance and employee morale.
While some departments saw potential benefits in compressed work weeks, others noted challenges due to operational requirements. Public works, utilities, recreation, tourism, and emergency services often require staffing outside traditional office hours or seven-day coverage.
Town Hall staff suggested that longer operating hours Monday through Thursday could improve public access while allowing more focused work time for employees. Council is being asked to receive the report for information, with no immediate changes recommended.
