Canadian residents will be able to fish across Ontario without purchasing a licence or Outdoors Card during a special Canada Day initiative.
The Ontario government says free fishing will be available from June 27 through July 5, giving residents an opportunity to enjoy the province’s lakes, rivers and waterways at no cost.
Officials say the annual program is intended to celebrate Canada Day while encouraging people to spend more time outdoors and explore recreational opportunities in communities across the province. The initiative is also designed to support local tourism by attracting residents and visitors to parks, campgrounds, marinas and other outdoor destinations.
While fishing licences and Outdoors Cards will not be required during the free fishing period, anglers must continue to follow all provincial fishing regulations. This includes obeying catch and size limits, respecting sanctuaries and adhering to species-specific rules in the area where they are fishing.
The province is reminding participants to carry government-issued identification showing their name and date of birth while fishing.
More information on fishing regulations and conservation rules is available through Ontario’s recreational fishing regulations summary.
