Leeds and the Thousand Islands Council will consider approving additional funding next week for a major upgrade at Fire Station 1 designed to improve firefighter safety and expand storage space.
At its July 13 meeting, council will be asked to approve a $75,000 transfer from the Township’s Capital Infrastructure Contingency and award the construction contract to Ubcon Construction Limited for $238,525.44, including the net HST.
The project will see the construction of a new clean room, bunker gear room, office, and mezzanine. The clean room will feature positive air pressure, creating an airlock between the vehicle bay and firefighter equipment to help reduce exposure to harmful contaminants. The mezzanine will provide additional storage space for the department.
The project was originally allocated $200,000 in the Township’s 2026 capital budget, but design costs and higher-than-expected construction bids created a funding shortfall. Three bids were received, with Ubcon Construction submitting the lowest compliant bid.
If approved, construction will move forward using the additional contingency funding.
