Today we are looking at The Vandermeer Farm
For Gary Vandermeer, farming has been a way of life since he was just 13 years old.
After moving in with his sister, Vandermeer began working on the family farm in the 1970s, helping raise nearly 2,000 pigs. Those early years taught him the value of hard work, responsibility and earning rewards through dedication—lessons he says have stayed with him throughout his life.
As the agricultural industry changed and the hog market shifted, the family transitioned into cash crop farming. Vandermeer says while the early years of growing crops were challenging, this season has been one of the best in recent memory.
Although farming is no longer a full-time occupation for him, Vandermeer says he still enjoys getting out into the fields and taking part in the work that has shaped much of his life.
He also hopes more young people will consider agriculture, saying the industry offers valuable life lessons that extend far beyond the farm.
