The 30th annual Pabst Shootout saw heavy rains washout the program on July 1st at the Can Am Speedway in Lafargeville New York. Fast forward to September, the weather was perfect for round 7 of the DIRTCar 358 Modified Series event which saw plenty of great action all night long.
Before the 50 lap event stared, defending race winner Mike Mahaney slowed with a problem on the pace lap. Mahaney was pushed to the pits and was not able to take the green flag. At the start of the race, 2026 track champion Billy Dunn was in control leading by over 4 seconds with Mat Williamson in hot pursuit. On lap 15 the top 2 would enter traffic as Williamson closed in on the race leader. On lap 16 Williamson took over the lead as behind them a great battle took place. Derek Webb, Chris Raabe, Carey Terrance, Lance Willix and Shaun Shaw, were having a spirited battle for position. Tim Fuller also joined the party and made some big moves toward the front taking the 6th spot from Raabe by the halfway point. Up front Billy Dunn continued to pressure Williamson for the lead, however the defending series champion was up to the task and held off the 8 time track champion. On lap 30 the first caution flew for Genavieve Bartlett who spun in turns 1 and 2. When the green flew it was again Williamson in control with Dunn close by, however Lance Willix made some big moves and charged to third over Terrance, Webb and Shaw. As the laps clicked off the inside lane was the place to be as Williamson was trying to hold on for his first Pabst Shootout win, while Dunn was looking for his third. On the final lap Billy Dunn made a big move on the outside for the lead but it was not meant to be, as Money Mat Williamson claimed his third series win of the season and first Pabst Shootout win. Lance Willix was able to get by Billy Dunn at the line for second. Carey Terrance and Tim Fuller completed the top 5.
The DIRTCar Sportsman Series was on hand to finish their portion of the Pabst Shootout. 2026 Land of Legends Sportsman champion Richard Murtaugh drew the pole and took over the lead at the start of the 30 lap event over Gavin Eisele and Mason Rogers. The field strung out single file as Murtaugh began to pull away but Gavin Eisele, the 2026 Can Am champion, was closing in on the leader. Lapped traffic once again became a factor, which spelled trouble for second place Gavin Eisele. On lap 14 while trying to get by a lapped car, the two drivers made contact, with Eisele’s car suffering heavy damage and the caution flew. When the green came back out Murtaugh remained in control with Jessica Power taking second while 13 year old Mason Rogers continued to have a career night running in third. As the laps wound down Richard Murtaugh was running strong on this night and showed no signs of letting up. Over the final laps both Power and Rogers were not able to close in as Richard Murtaugh scored his third series win of the season and 2nd series win at Can Am. Jessica Power crossed in 2nd with Mason Rogers coming home for an impressive third place run. Last Friday’s winner Logan Brown also had a great showing to finish in the 4th spot, with Tyler Corcoran rounding out the top 5.
The night was completed with the second 305/602 Sprint Car Challenge event of the season. Dillon Paddock started on the pole in the 25 lap event and would lead the opening 5 laps with Nick Webb closing quickly from the runner up spot. On lap 6 the leaders entered traffic and it did not end well for Webb. Heading into turn 3 the Brownville New York driver tangled with a slower car sending them both spinning out. Webb’s car dug in and flipped many times in turn 3 and the red flag was displayed. Nick Webb was able to climb out and walk away from his damaged car uninjured. When the green flew Paddock continued his great drive, but Spencer Burley was on the move to 2nd, while Tucker Donath and Shawn Donath along with George Sanford filled out the top 5 spots. Burley caught Paddock in traffic, but veteran Shawn Donath was closing as well setting up a great battle. Paddock was able to get away from the field as Donath took over the 2nd spot from Burley in the closing laps. Without a caution in the final laps, Dillon Paddock wasn’t going to be stopped as he scored his first ever Can Am win. Shawn Donath crossed in second with Geroge Sanford taking an impressive third place run. Spencer Burley finished 4th with Tucker Donath completing the top 5.
Tonight the action continues with night 1 of the official Showdown in September weekend kicking off. The DIRTCar 358 Modified series is back for a second straight night of racing along with the annual John Burr Memorial for the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman division. Also on the card it will be a double header for the Empire Super Sprints. The series will complete their held over 25 lap A main from the Pabst Shootout night in July, then come back for a full racing program and another 25 lap feature event later on. Hot laps and time trials get underway at 6pm with the first heat event going green tonight at 7pm.
