The Town of Gananoque says it will not enforce its current limit on the number of election signs candidates can display during the 2026 municipal election.
The Town says legal advice has determined the existing provision, which limits municipal candidates to a maximum of 40 signs each, is likely a violation of freedom of expression under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
As a result, the 40-sign restriction will not be enforced during this election period.
The Town says the current Sign By-law will be amended in the future to clarify rules surrounding election signs, including restrictions on signs placed on municipal property.
A draft of the updated election sign provisions will be presented to the incoming Gananoque Council, which will serve from 2026 to 2030.
The proposed changes will be subject to legal review before being considered for adoption.
