A quick ride on an e-scooter could lead to a costly fine in Brockville, where the popular devices remain illegal on public roads, sidewalks and pathways.
The Brockville Police Service says e-scooters, also known as kick scooters, cannot legally be operated in public spaces because the city has not passed a bylaw allowing them under Ontario’s provincial pilot program.
That means riders can use the scooters only on private property in Brockville.
Police say they will increase education and enforcement around e-scooter use in the community. Fines for operating the devices where they are not permitted range from $250 to $2,500.
Ontario municipalities must pass a bylaw to opt into the provincial pilot regulation before e-scooters can legally be used on public roads and other permitted areas.
Police are urging residents to understand the rules and keep e-scooters off public ways unless and until local regulations change.
