The annual Poppy Campaign is getting underway in Leeds and the Thousand Islands, with Mayor Corinna Smith-Gatcke receiving the first poppy of 2026.
The presentation took place October 19th in Council Chambers, where Seeley’s Bay Royal Canadian Legion Branch 491 President Martin Hankes-Drielsma presented the mayor with the first poppy.
The tradition marks the official start of the campaign, which honours veterans and remembers those who served and sacrificed for Canada.
The Royal Canadian Legion says the National Poppy Campaign will officially launch October 24th, a new permanent start date going forward.
New and returning initiatives will highlight this year’s period of Remembrance, continuing through November 11th.
Residents are encouraged to wear a poppy as a visible sign of remembrance and support for veterans.
