The Gananoque Canoe Club is thanking local police and fire services for helping its Special Olympics program grow and succeed.
Gananoque Police Sergeant Mike Driscoll has organized the annual Responders in Support of the Gananoque Canoe Club golf tournament for the past three years. The initiative has raised $20,000 for the program.
The club’s Special Olympics program has grown from six athletes eight years ago to 16 today. Funds have helped purchase recreational kayaks, life jackets, an accessible surf ski and sprint racing kayaks.
Club athletes have competed at the Ontario Summer Games, provincial championships and Canadian Canoe and Kayak Championships.
Most notably, two athletes represented the club at the Canadian National Championships, bringing home gold and bronze medals.
The club says Driscoll’s efforts, along with support from local police and fire departments, have created more opportunities for athletes with diverse needs to participate and reach their potential.
A small gathering is being planned to recognize Driscoll’s contributions and celebrate the national championship success.
