The Gananoque Police Service is reminding motorists to use extra caution in school zones following recent concerns about safety, particularly around school crossing guards.
Police say school zones are designated Community Safety Zones, meaning fines for many traffic offences are doubled.
Disobeying a crossing guard or failing to yield to pedestrians at a crossover can result in a $730 fine and four demerit points.
Drivers are also reminded to stop for school buses on any road and remain stopped until the red lights stop flashing and the stop arm folds away. A first offence for illegally passing a school bus can carry a fine of up to $2,000 and six demerit points.
Police are also urging motorists to slow down, watch for children at bus stops and use extra caution during dark or foggy mornings.
They say taking a few extra seconds can help keep local children safe.
