Online scams and fraud are the focus of a Crime Prevention Week reminder from the Gananoque Police Service.
Police say scammers are constantly changing their tactics, using emails, text messages, phone calls and social media to trick people into handing over personal or banking information.
Fraudsters often pretend to represent trusted organizations, including banks and delivery companies, or even pose as family members in trouble.
Police are encouraging residents to pause before clicking suspicious links or opening attachments, and to verify requests by contacting the person or company directly using trusted contact information.
They also warn against sharing banking details, Social Insurance Numbers or passwords unless the recipient’s identity has been confirmed.
Police say talking openly about scams is another important way to protect the community, as sharing experiences can help prevent others from becoming victims.
Their message is simple: if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
